Out of the scripts we were given I decided to choose Pulp Fiction.
I think that the font 'Subtle Malice' that I made last project fits the character of The Wolf well. The character Jules tries to be cool and is the most sensible so I chose to use Helvetica for his lines, while for Vincent I think Times New Roman fits better since he is the most eccentric out of the two. For Jimmie I have used Bahnschrift Light Condensed as he is quite uptight and anxious while being soft spoken. |
I started by drawing out quick thumbnails to get my ideas down on paper. The first ones shown on the left turned out too illustrative for the brief so I simplified down my ideas as shown on the right.
First drafts - Testing out initial ideas
Spacing out pages more
My previous ideas felt a bit too clustered together, especially with the large amounts of text on each page so I experimented with splitting up my design for pages 2 and 3 into two double page spreads along with some new ideas. Despite it now feeling less overwhelmed with text it now feels too bare and empty.
Combining ideas
This page still feels too clustered as I feel the text at the bottom takes away the full attention from the larger writing above.
I want to begin trying to experiment with more abstract designs next.

Huge Heteronyms
Wound – to injure
Wound – coiled up
Desert – a dry place
Desert – to abandon
This task helped me be more playful when using type to convey particular words in different expressive ways. I found creating designs for wound a lot easier than desert, with the latter proving difficult for me to convey. Despite this I think continuing to push at further developing and altering my ideas proved helpful to combating this difficulty.
Front Cover
When designing the front cover, I wanted it to stand out front the inside pages while keeping the same style used throughout. I experimented with both white and black backgrounds and decided on going with the black as I think it makes the text stand out more and gives a bold look.
Back Cover
I wanted the back cover to match the front, so despite liking the effect that the fourth variation gave I didn't think that it fit well with the simple bold colours used on the cover and decided that the fifth variation worked best. I think that the vivid red feels more aggressive and the sharpness works well with the text.
Page 2-3
Page 4-5
Page 6-7
I decided to go with the design on the right as it fills the awkward space left in the centre better.
Page 8-9
I decided to go with the design on the left as I think the one on the right over complicates the page and makes it feel too clustered.
Page 10-11
I decided to go with the layout on the right as I think it's more clear that the line is from Jules as it is inline with the continuation of his speech just below.
Final Pages
I think that my final outcome came out well and has taught me a lot about using type. If I were to attempt this task again, I think I would experiment with a more abstract approach with more confidence shown in the decisions made as I think more time and practice will help me achieve that. Overall, this project has helped give me a better understanding of how to use type in a more expressive and creative way which is something I want to continue to improve at doing and understanding throughout my work.
